St. Louis company recycles trees toppled by tornado into usable lumber

A local lumber mill is salvaging wood from trees felled by the May tornado that would otherwise go to a landfill or be mulched.

Lumber Logs, a lumber recycling company, has been removing trees from storm-damaged neighborhoods in St. Louis as a service to residents, sorting through the trunks to find usable logs and milling them into usable lumber.

The company has been operating in the city for more than 20 years. Joe Wilp, the owner, thinks of it as a higher calling for trees that would be simply discarded, especially native specimens like Osage Orange, Sweetgum, and Mulberry that are typically overlooked by commercial lumber operators.

Design Speak: Q&A With The Gilder's Tip

Where are these unique materials sourced from?

I get eggshells, straw and parchment locally, the gypsum is from the southwest, and the shagreen comes from Indonesia. And there is a great source for reclaimed wood in north St. Louis called Lumber Logs. With the green movement and more people interested in renewing things, it’s a great time to be a craftsman in St. Louis.
